New beers on tap in the Crescent Moon….

Anchor CA Lager is a re-make of California’s first Lager brewed in 1876. Made in San Francisco with two-row California barley, Cluster hops (the premier hop in 19th-century California), and Anchor’s own lager yeast. It has a balanced flavor and a smooth finish. Perfect for Summer. 4.9%

Weyerbacher White Sun Wit is unfiltered yet crisp, brewed with coriander, orange peel, grains of paradise, and star anise it has a pleasant spiciness, and a hit of tartness. No my usual go-to style but it was a surprise to me how much I liked this beer! 5%

Boulevard Saison-Brett is back. This assertively dry hopped Brett Farmhouse Ale is extremely pleasing and we consider every keg a treat to pour. If you haven’t had it, you are a beer failure. Delicious! 8.5%

Lagunitas WTF and Undercover Investigation Shutdown are both on tap in the Moon. WTF is a imperial brown ale with a pleasing hop presence 7.83% and Undercover is an extra bitter ale as is the story behind the name. 9.7%

We hope you are all enjoying the table service in the Huber Haus. I’ll admit an added bonus is how nice it is to sit at the bar and not have people ordering between you. We have recently added a Hacker-Pschorr special every Tuesday. Get any Hacker-Pschorr on tap for $3.75 a half liter and $7.50 a Liter. If you have not tried the new to us Berentzen Wild Cherry, a German made cherry schnapps, you really should, an easy delicious shot to share with friends. $3 each and on special every Friday for $2.50. See you there!

Well folks, there is good news from Beertopia…a lot of new beers have hit the shelves, and looking into the crystal ball, the year should be a banner one from what we have been hearing….just don’t ask yet So because I have a lot to write this week, I’ll shut up and get to it.

Abita Lemon Wheat- I admit I have not tried it, YET..but Abita cranks out nice seasonals and seeing as they use a Biere de Garde yeast strain as well as wheat malt, Centennial hops and lemon peel, this is the perfect sounding quencher for today’s humidity.

Breckenridge Summerbright-here it is, one of my summer favorites in 6-pack of CANS!! Oh,Yeah Baby…this is one you need in your fun portfolio as you head out to take on the Midwest wilderness, survival liquid if ever there was..anyway a hint of lemon and orange, Fuggle, Cascade and Willamette hops, 2-row Pale, white wheat, Carapils and Munich malts, top fermenting ale yeast and a decidedly approachable 4.5% ABV..if you haven’t had it, it is high time you did.

Anchor California Lager- Our friends from Anchor are pleased to introduce their newest 6 pack endeavor…an historic nod to a tiny 1876 brewery named Boca who produced the first genuine lager in California. Made in traditional form with the predominant hop of yesteryear, Cluster, 2-row barley and Anchor’s own lager yeast, this beer is krausened and lagered in their cellars. Creamy, balanced and oh so flavorful, make this part of your beer drinking adventure into history…

Anchor “Zynaster Series” No.4 Fort Ross Farmhouse Ale-whew, a mouthful…and that’s what you get with this wonderful new farmhouse-style ale…delicious, lush and full of flavor, this one is way up this saison fan’s list of great incarnations of the style..this is another historical themed beer from Anchor, brewed to recognize the hardy souls who peopled the Russian-American Co’s. Fort Ross stockade north of San Fransisco over 200 years ago. Wheat, barley and a native perennial called Yerba Santa were harvested in those days, and this beer brings these ingredients into play along with a local saison yeast to fulfill all your summer saison dreamin’….no flowers in your hair required.

Efes & Efes Dark-from exotic Istanbul, Turkey comes the local tipple..Efes Premium is a pilsener-style lager that enjoys huge popularity there, Efes is the 8th most popular beer by volume in Europe, using rice as an adjunct gives it the unique taste. Efes Dark is a dark 6.5% lager, malty, sweet and caramel..I drank this in-situ for the first time in Istanbul in October, and given the restricted selection over there, was happy to have something new to try…so, if you have ever been fortunate to have enjoyed a great fresh fish dinner on the banks of the Bosphorus, or just want to conjure it up, give these 2 a try(and lend a little support to the beer drinkers on Taksim Square, that’s all they wish to be able to do freely!)

Odell Brewing Company-yip,yip, yayhoo! a 12 pack with inspiration..a mix of 90 Schilling, St. Lupulin, IPA and the new Looseleaf Session Ale, a 4.5% Pale that is from the brewery’s 5-barrel pilot system…I have not had it but will by the weekend:-)

Sprecher Bootlegger’s Bourbon Barrel Hard Root Beer-do I need to speak? I think not….imagine Mom and Dad pulling into the drive-in and handing you kiddos a root beer float with this? Probably could have solved a lot more of the world’s problems by now…ok, it is Root Beer/with Booze/in Beertopia/Amazing…don’t miss out

Thomas Creek Castaway Chocolate Orange IPA-WHAT?? yes, it’s GOOD..my sample was quite cool, so orange hit the senses, chocolate was dancing on the tongue, and I think the hops were just right..a very interesting combo, from the folks in South Carolina, where they must do a lot of day-dreaming of beer styles, this one is fun!

Lakefront “My Turn” Series CHAD Organic Barleywine-a new series dedicated to the folks who do the everyday chores at Lakefront, Chad is evidently a “Zealot” about his beers..sounds like some folks I know. So, this 12.5%, 74 IBU Barleywine should satisfy the most discriminating of beer lovers, and at less than $5 a bottle, what are you waiting for? We don’t have a lot.

We got a deal for you…….starting Thursday, we will have an amazing Lithuanian beer deal, cases of Ekstra, Svytury’s, Baltijos, and Utenos for a whopping 11.99!! Yes that is right, folks, 11.99 a case…first come, first serve as long as they last! And, if you know anything about the Lithuanians, they can and would drink most of us under the table and their biggest beer drinking holiday approaches, Summer Solstice. So plan your pagan bonfire-jumping holiday around this incredible offer..and, just maybe find a closet Lithuanian to invite, you’ll be glad you did!!!

That wraps up an eventful stocking week here at Beertopia. Don’t forget we stock 10# bags of ice, ask if we have any keg deals, these sneak up quickly and end just as fast. Thanks to you all for your continued business at the most fun place to work in Omaha, ’til next week, Mike and the fun folks at Beertopia.

Cheers to American Craft Beer Week!

In honor of American Craft Beer Week, tonight (Wed.) we will be tapping a ultra-rare keg of Class of ’88 Collaborative Barleywine from North Coast Brewing Co in Max and Joe’s. Rogue Nation (Newport, OR) Deschutes Brewery,(Bend, OR) and North Coast Brewing Co. (Fort Bragg, CA). all brewed this same Barelywine to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of their openings. Each brewery brewed a batch at their location with the same traditional Bareywine ingredients, same yeast, with the water from each brewery’s location being the only difference. 1988 was apparently a good year to start a craft brewery. Across the country and especially on the West Coast, a number of new breweries opened this same year. Known as the Class of ’88, breweries such as Deschutes, Rogue, North Coast, Grand Teton, Boulevard, Great Lakes, Goose Island, Vermont Brewery & Pub, and Wynkoop are among the most notables to open for business in 1988.

American Craft Beer Week is proceeding apace with our nightly in-store tastings..Tonight, is Okoboji Brewery from Iowa. Come join us from 4-6!

Otherwise, few new beers have entered the realm, but what did is a BIG deal.

Upstream Brewery-special release from the fine folks @ Upstream come 4 Belgian style beers..barreled lovelies, these promise to intrigue the tastebuds of the seasoned seekers of Templeton and Woodford Reserve aged beers, a Tripel, Dubbel and Quad all aged in Templeton, and the Scotch Ale rested in Woodford Reserve. Expect lush candy and oak to rush the senses, lower carbonation is to be expected with these, so DON’T PANIC, they are intended to be as is, and, with the VERY limited release, you don’t want be left empty-handed…late news from the scene, the Tripel is wonderfully carbonated, Rye-tinged sour I would say, very, very good…

Wild Onion-SummerWit is here! Don’t lose your wits! Get some! Belgian-inspired 12 OZ cans will be part of your summer plans, the malted wheat, coriander and orange peel is the perfect way to combat those 100 degree days…shoulda had some yesterday, eh?

Sierra Nevada-good news hop-hounds, Southern Hemisphere hits the store on Friday! This has been a customer favorite, so as such I ordered more!! but still, it won’t last long.Crescent Moon Ale House • Huber Haus German Bier Hall • Max & Joe’s Belgian Tavern • Beertopia

Greetings from Beertopia! News from the beer front is steady as she goes…Summer beers continue to make their way into the store,

and happily it feels much nicer than it did this time last week! So without further ado, here is what is new for the week…

Anchor Summer-not your average wheat beer, Anchor uses a 50% blend of malted wheat, plus a top fermenting ale yeast that adds a clean taste and fluffy head, perfect for that mushroom-hunting road trip to your favorite sun-dappled glen…

Wasatch Summerbrau Lager-ah, a Utah-born Czech Pilsener! How’s that for your global village? Well, this crisp, clean and slightly bitter lager delivers all you need to “Check” out around a campfire while stargazing this summer, can I come along?

August Schell Lakemaid-well, what can I say…who wouldn’t want to catch a Mermaid? or rather, a tasty fresh-water lager brewed in conjunction with Rapala, the fishing gurus of the Northwoods lakes. Imagine yourself, trolling lazily and reeling in one(or more) of these? Let’s go fishin’!!

Lucky Bucket Flip Flop-politicians need not apply! This ale brewed with strawberry concentrate is pure fun! Light with clean strawberry essence, this is sure-fire lake and swimming hole beer, grab your flip flops and let’s GO!

Funkwerks Solenna-Yes, Funkwerks fans, a new one! Solenna uses a traditional yeast strain, adds Brettanomyces and German hops..tatsing this today brought out balanced subtle Brett-influenced hop aromas, then followed with some cinnamon, and to me a gathering mild heat on the tongue. This beer will be a neat pairing with some Indian onion kulcha, a very appealing appetizer beer. Try some starting Thursday!

That about wraps up things up from here, but starting this week, I want to pick one random beer to highlight each week, something in season, or just a whim of ours here in the store, sooooo, this week‘s Weekly Winner!

Wittekerke Wit Beer-from the good folks at Brouwerij Bavik, this store favorite is a pale Belgian wheat..lemony,straw colored deliciousness in a 6-pack of cans. This will be your canoeing favorite when it gets to 90F, and it is time to get it stocked up, the Niobrara beckons, and unlike the old timers like me who had to be content with a lot of crappy beers on our floatrips, now you can enjoy pure delight from Belgium, in Nebraska!

Next week, American Craft Beer Week May 13-18 will feature daily tastings in-store with all of our distributors….from 4-6 nightly with some of the highlights being new seasonals from Big Sky, Tommyknocker, Okoboji, New Belgium, Summit and MORE!! So, mark your calendars and get down here (’cause we don’t want to drink it all!)

Tallgrass swings and smacks the hops right out of the park with this massive 110 IBU “West Coast style” IPA..and reflects the “Ethos” of the hop revolution happening in the Great Plains town of Manhattan, Kansas. We got a very limited amount for the rollout in Nebraska, but don’t despair, more is coming soon. It is sure to more than please those who are constantly seeking the hoppiest beers out there.

Weyerbacher Riserva-now for the wild ale fans out there comes this Brett/Raspberry puree oak monster, aged for over a year, at 11.4% I am salivating just thinking about how fabulous this would be with a big New York cheescake..and then a good cigar.

Weyerbacher Heresy-making a much anticipated return, this is the Old Heathen Imperial Stout aged on bourbon barrels..did I hear moans of ecstasy from the cellar?? On a night like tonight, the aromas of vanilla, cocoa, and coffee blend with the whiskey for one truly extrordinary tipple, a beer to get passionate about…

Great Divide 19th Anniversary-out of bounds, this 10.2% ale is brewed with birch syrup, and then aged on birch!!! Like a Northwoods dream come true, this luscious beer should pair up well with some spicy foods, and, a camping trip among the birch forests this coming summer!

Rogue Voodoo-it’s back!! smoky, maple-y, and bacon-y…if you missed out the first time, get into what you have been mssing!

Thats about all folks, but wait!! With keg season here, we have some smokin’ deals! Boulevard Irish Ale 1/2 Barrel $75, Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye $110. Get these while they last, at these prices, they won’t last long!

Stop in and meet some new faces @ Beertopia-we all really enjoy meeting and helping our customers each and every day!!! I will be enjoying some of these beers back in front of the fireplace this weekend by the way it looks today, have a great weekend from Beertopia!

Beertopia news as follows…

A crazy last 2 weeks with new brews!

Odell’s has released 2 brews this week. The first is their St. Lupulin Extra Pale Ale. This beer is a hop session beer before they became “hop session” beers. Hop forward with the balance necessary to make this really good. The next beer is their new Tree Shaker Imperial Peach IPA. As the name implies, it is a hop bombed beer with peach puree added. This one I was a little leery about until I tried it. Dang, was I wrong! Strong peach flavors make the hops in this beer absolutely shine. Massive malt profile is about perfect for this brew as well. Get this, and drink it as fresh as possible!

Point Brewing has released 2 beers this week as well. Nude Beach Wheat is a Beertopia favorite. Tangy wheat conforms into a touch of clove and banana. Excellent porch beer. The second offering is the Drop Dead Blonde. This very light beer is reminiscent of a very clean lager. It is light on the palate and very drinkable.

Great River has released 2 new brews this week as well. Dos Pistolas is a dark session ale that is a touch hoppy, and clean. This is a beer that needs to be drank fresh on a boat with a fishing pole in hand! The second brew is the Dirty Blonde Ale. This golden colored ale is brewed with chocolate syrup and coca nibs. Yes, a golden chocolate beer…Cool huh!?

There will be more new brews coming in everyday!! Stop by the store and ask one of our helpful associates about the new flavor of the day!!

News from the Beertopia side of the weather…

OOHHHHs and AHHHHS are abound this week for new brews!!

The group of brewers from Schmaltz Brewing have sent us 2 quirky new brews. The first of which is their Funky Jewbelation. This barrel aged concoction is very unique. Aromas of sour cherries coincide with tangy sourness. The palate is just as complex. Woody, fruited cherry, bourbon and alcohol are all crammed into this 22oz bottle. The second offering is their Re-Jewvenator. This is a Belgian style dubbel AND a Euro dopplebock. Not sure how this is accomplished but never the less. Aromas of figs (maybe Fig Newtons??) and raisins. Sweet on the palate with chocolate and toffee making their way up. Two very interesting new offerings I must say…

The next group of beers is a new brewery to Nebraska! Wild Onion brews are another canned offering! They have sent us Jack Stout, Hop Slayer Imperial IPA, PAddy Pale Ale and Phat Chance Blonde Ale. Stop by the store this Thursday from 4-6pm to sample these brews out!!

Lagunitas and their infinite hoppy wisdom has released their new seasonal, Under Cover Investigation Shut Down Ale. Yes a beer name to be reckoned with. This double IPA is a bit on the mellow side for Lagunitas. Aromas are somewhat subdued. But don’t let that fool you at all. The flavors kick right in with consistent hoppiness and excellent bready mouthfeel. This beer should be a great addition to the upcoming warmer months.

Lakefront 25th Anniversary ale is new in 4 packs. This Imperial Cherry Stout is wicked good. Bitter dark chocolate and sweet cocoa nibs make the cherries peek through perfectly. Like an evening on the back porch watching the full moon develop on the eastern horizon…wow, did I just say that??!! This really hits my spot, if ya know what I mean!! Yes I am drinking one as I type this message. Could you tell?

New Belgium has made a new Summer Seasonal. The brew is called Rolle Bolle. Odd, but very clever. The name is of a Belgian game that is basically horseshoes on wheels. Anyway, the beer is a pale ale of sorts that is very easy to drink. Soursop and monkfruit are designed into this brew. The palate is refreshing and extremely simple. Hints of fruit on the nose and cracker dryness on the palate. Check out the game on You Tube www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYiLSsjxzQw.

Have a great week and we will see you tomorrow for the Wild Onion sampling here in the store from 4-6pm.

We would like to extend a huge Thank you to all our volunteers that worked Bockfest. We feel lucky to have a great group of friends volunteering. It was a good turn out and a fun time for all, despite the snow.

Max and Joe’s will open at 6pm this Thursday, March 28th due to a private party.

Events to add to your calendar…

Polishfest June 8th at 12pm, inside and Outside event. More details TBA.

Barry Boyce Band plays The Huber Haus next on Saturday, April 20th starting at 9pm.

New Beers on tap in The Crescent Moon….

New ON CASK is Empyrean Watchman IPA with Pineapple. 6%

Breckenridge 72 Imperial Chocolate Crème Stout is back. It is brewed with chocolate from Colorado’s very own Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Inc. This Imperial Chocolate Cream Stout is full of rich, toasted chocolate notes with hints of dark fruit.7.2%

Also from Breckenridge is Pandora’s Bock has a wealth of caramel, nutty malt flavor and complexity. Brewed with Two Row Pale, Munich, Caramel malts and Strisselspalt, Columbus, Northern Brewer, Hersbrucker hops then bottom fermented at colder temperatures for a smooth yet assertive character. 7.5%

Lagunitas Brown Shugga was born on accident as as an aborted batch of Lagunitas Old Gnarleywine that ended up tasting different than what they were hoping for, so they bottled it and called it Brown Shugga. 9.9% and 51 IBU’s.

Peace Tree Red Rambler Ale is brewed with the finest quality pale, caramel, and lightly roasted malts contributing to the deep red color and malty flavor balanced with the bitterness of 3 hop varieties. 5.8% and 35 IBU’s.

News from the Beertopia side of things…

This week has been a lucrative week for new brewskies!!

Sam Adams Long Shot 6 packs are in this week. The 3 new brews are as follows. 1.) A Strawberry Lager. This light lager is spiced with strawberry and has notes of toffee and citrus. 2.)Beer Flower Wheat. This wheat based beer is flavored with Hibiscus flowers. 3.) Magnificent Seven is a double IPA. This beer is brewed with 7 different hop varieties.

Left Coast is a new brew to Nebraska. 6 total new varieties will be available starting Thursday. Trestles IPA, Voodoo American Stout, Asylum Belgian Trippel, Hop Juice Imp. IPA, The Wedge which is a Black IPA, Una Mas is an Amber Lager. We will be having an in-store tasting NEXT Thursday, April 4th with Adam Desler, our favorite Quality Brand manager.

Bass IPA is a new offering! This English style IPA is really quite good. Smooth hop flavor coincide with sweet English malts. Quite a nice offering from a very sustained brewery!

Tommy Knocker made this seasonal last year and was a huge hit. This Saison is really good again this year! Sweet grain notes accompany Belgian sweetness. Get here before this one is gone!!

Goose Island sure is renowned for their high alcohol stouts huh? Well, the Summertime Kolsch style beer sure is a very fly under the radar beer for me. This style is so easy to drink and enjoy. Light, crisp and just enough hops to ask for another on the Summer months that are hopefully ahead if us.

New Belgium Hoppy Bock is from their new Hop Kitchen Series which is all about hops.
August Shell’s Bock is rich malty with a moderately bitter hop bite. One of my favorites when it comes to Bock beer for poking. 6.1%

Great Divide Old Ruffian Barley-Wine is a hefty, hop-forward bold beer. Bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness are balanced by a rich, slightly creamy caramel malt. At 90IBU’s and 10.2% ABV it is not for the weak.

Magners Irish Cider is aged in oak and brewed in Ireland. Delicious!

Zipline NZ IPA is a New Zealand IPA that delivers crazy amounts of hop flavor, without the palate pounding bitterness. Citrus-packed New Zealand hops deliver the usual IPA flavors of tropical fruit and citrus found in most American IPAs. However, unlike the American counterparts, the New Zealand hops also roll blackberry and orange marmalade flavor and aroma into the mix. Mix it up.

Lucky Bucket Spring Break Saison is a Seasonal Belgian-style Saison. 5.3%

New ON CASK Empyrean Coffee infused Collapsar Oatmeal Stout has rich coffee and chocolate flavors smoothed out by the addition of oatmeal. 6%

Upstream Flanagan’s Irish Red has a sweet, caramel malt aroma with hints of toffee and minimal hop presence. The flavor profile is well balanced and in sync with the aroma with a subtle roasted finish that dries the palate. Overall this medium bodied, moderately carbonated ale is easy drinking. 5.3%

Zipline Oatmeal Porter incorporating the smooth creaminess of organic rolled oats, dark malts give it chocolate and coffee undertones and a little creative hopping with Magnum and Sterling makes a well-balanced porter.

Odell’s Amuste is an Imperial Porter aged in oak wine barrels accented with juice from Tempranillo grapes grown on the Western Slope of Colorado, this harmonic combination is truly, a must. 9.3%

Great Divide Espresso Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout has a generous infusion of Denver’s own Pablo’s espresso adds yet another layer of complexity, combining with the vanilla oak character, intense roasty maltiness and bold hop profile to create a whole new breed of mythical creature. 9.5%

O’Hara’s Irish Stout pours deep black with a thick creamy head. A true Irish Stout from Carlow’s Brewing Co. in Ireland. Award winning, full bodied with a robust flavor and luxuriously smooth dry espresso like finish. A generous addition of Fuggles hops lead to a tart bitterness which mingles with the espresso like flavors. 4.3%

O’Hara’s Irish Pale Ale has light malt base with just the right mouth feel to allow the hop character to predominate. Grapefruit like bitterness is full and lasting balanced by a zesty citrus burst of aroma from the late addition of Cascade hops, dry hopped for extra aroma.

News From Beertopia….

Hows about some new brews for ya??!!

Several new things have arrived this week…sounds like a broken record. But a darn good record!!

Abita Strawberry Harvest has made it return. This is a perennial favorite among Spring beer drinkers. Lightly fruity coincides with a very faint grain and hop profile. Very drinkable or as we say in the beer geek world, highly sessionable.

A new brew from Squatters showed up as well. Radio from Hell is the name of this Red Ale. This very well made amber boast a creative malt profile soon followed by a clean hop bitterness. I really liked this beer a lot!

Blue Moon and there creative ways have come out with a new Spring offering. Valencia Amber ale boast a huge orange flavor backed by a wheat base. Typical Blue Moon spices are here but balance well.

Schell’s Maifest is back too. This golden Bock beer is really a crazy good hopped, malty creation. Golden is color the aromas are up toasty grains and the palate is of hoppy goodness.

Leiny’s has released the Summer Shandy. This “Country Time” lemonade beer is the perfect complement to the soon to be hot summer days. This beer has become so popular, it is being made this much sooner to keep up with demand!
